Faversham Creek has been a centre for ship building and repair for more than 300 years. In recent years Standard Quay has regenerated the heritage, skills and apprentice training of Faversham’s maritime craftsmen. It is the last stronghold of traditional barges in the South East of England.

Standard Quay, on Faversham Creek’s unique historic waterway, is of national and European importance. This industry, jobs and heritage is now under immediate threat.

We, the undersigned, petition Swale Borough Council to protect, preserve and enhance Standard Quay and the Creek environment for the building, restoration, maintenance and berthing of traditional vessels by all means possible including:

1. Helping to secure the quayside, land and buildings at Standard Quay so that local maritime craftsmen can continue their traditional boatbuilding and apprentice training activities, and Faversham Creek can expand as a national centre for Thames Sailing barge berthing, repair and restoration.

2. A Guarantee that any future Faversham Creek Development Plan will specifically rule out any possibility of the historic Standard Quay site being developed inappropriately in future – for example for housing, restaurants, cafes, hotels, licensed premises and retail use.

3. Rejecting any proposed change of use for Standard Quay’s quayside buildings, so they can continue to be used for their traditional purposes by maritime craftsmen.

Please sign this e-petition as it offers an opportunity to register public support for serious moves to save Faversham’s Standard Quay from an inappropriate development that would curtail or end the boat building and repairing being carried out there now. It’s a cause that deserves the support of anyone who cares about the future of traditional boat building, and about the future of the Thames sailing barge fleet.

If you’re new to this issue, read more about the danger to Standard Quay at the Faversham Creek website and from this national newspaper article.

Also, do please take a moment to read the latest news and watch a short movie about Faversham Creek and Standard Quay put together by local film maker Simon Clay and journalist Richard Fleury. In relation to that site, I’d be curious to know which of the facts included in Simon Henley’s article are held to be incorrect by councillors. The news section of Simon and Richard’s site will explain what I mean.

I should report that I wrote to many of the local councillors just before an important meeting held in November and did not receive a single reply – not even an acknowledgement.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in a wide variety of consumer products, and biomonitoring studies indicate widespread exposure to the compound. Much of the hesitation to regulate BPA up to now has stemmed from uncertainty about whether health effects reported in laboratory animals-which include heart disease, obesity, diabetes, reproductive health problems, and several types of cancer—can be extrapolated to humans. In this podcast, Frederick vom Saal discusses recent findings that suggest mice, rhesus monkeys, and humans metabolize BPA at similar rates, raising the possibility that effects observed in animal models may be relevant to humans as well. I can’t understand more than a few words of this beautiful-sounding little song, but I’m told its about an elderly man and his old boat on the Canal du Midi. The boat’s at the end of its useful life, but somehow it’s skipper finds it difficult to part with her. I guess many intheboatshed.net readers probably feel much the same way as the chap in the song, as they set off each morning to work on their projects.

I hope you like it as much as we did when we met Emmanuel Pariselle at Melodeons and More, at Mendlesham in Suffolk a couple of years ago – he was teaching a group to make melodeons (he’d call them diatos, btw) and playing in a concert, while we were some way down the bill (there’s a photo to prove it!).

Cornish artist Glyn Macey will be exhibiting a major new collection of paintings inspired by his camper van travels around Britain.

Known for stirring land and seascapes, Glyn's work is distinctive.

'The collection demonstrates Glyn's famously strong, striking style of work,' said a spokesman for Rostra and Rooskmore Galleries, in Bath, where the artwork is being exhibited.

Glyn, was born in Newlyn, and attended the Falmouth School of Art, where he studied graphic design.

He has previously been involved in a year long project with the National Trust, raising the charity £22,000 through the sale of his paintings. He also completed an eight month coastal journey to raise money for the RNLI in 2009.

For his most recent exhibition, Glyn travelled round the country in a camper van capturing the most inspiring elements of the British landscape.

But Glyn insists that his heart still lies in very much in Cornwall.

'However much I love travelling and working in other parts of the country, Cornwall and especially Newlyn is still my home and first love,' he said.

Glyn will be at the opening night preview of the exhibition, on February 25, 5.30pm – 7.30pm at Rostra and Rooksmoor Galleries, Bath.

Now they have recorded an album of their traditional shanties and songs.

The singers who are or have been fishermen, lifeboat men and coastguards can be seen weekly performing on the Port Isaac harbour front during the summer months.

Precious is one of the prettiest 'Picaroons' you are likely to ever see.

She has also been maintained in tip top condition by Annie.

Annie Holmes has been sailing wooden boats in San Diego harbor since 1984.

Beside being an avid sailor, Annie is also a short story writer, poet and ?plein-air? painter specializing in painting small wooden boats and marine scenes.

Her memoir SKIFF SONG has won literary honors from the San Diego Book Awards Association.

This year, for the first time, National Historic Ships is running an exciting, new photographic competition in partnership with Classic Boat magazine. The competition has four categories and encourages entries from all those with an interest in maritime heritage, including school children, historic vessel owners, maritime enthusiasts and those with knowledge of traditional skills or nautical techniques.

There is a monetary prize of £1,000 for the overall competition winner, to be spent on a theme or activity involving a vessel from the National Register of Historic Vessels. Other prizes include camera equipment for schools, events on historic vessels, skills training and a 2 year subscription to Classic Boat.

The "13th Lake Rotoiti Classic and Wooden Boat Parade" in North Island NZ was a great success.

The fine weather and the spectacle of around seventy five official entrant boats parading on Lake Rotoiti along with a very large flotilla of spectator craft made this day probably the biggest gathering of boats on the Lake.

It concluded the first stage of a project which aims to regenerate the harbour by establishing a racing class of replica 19th century fishing lugger.
